THE MÉDOC THROUGHOUT THE AGES
Old building lovers will be keen to discover the Romanesque buildings that history has bequeathed to us. During your strolls around the Médoc, there are a number of historical sites and museums to visit, such as the Soulac-sur-Mer archaeological museum. You can imagine how the Médoc organised its defence with the fortress of Blanquefort, the Tour de l'Honneur in Lesparre and Fort Médoc in Cussac (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site) which, together with Blaye Citadel and Fort Paté, formed the “Verrou Vauban”, which protected Bordeaux from any attack from the estuary.
Soulac-sur-Mer, our ancient village, like Lacanau, had its heyday with the rising popularity of sea bathing and became a seaside resort in 1849. Discover its charming neo-colonial village and the history of its Basilique Notre Dame de la fin des Terres.
